about

Her name started with a C and this album I sent to her to try to convince her to take me back, with the feeling that it was hopeless and I would end up just writing "Songs for C in other Keys," i.e., seeking the love I had for her in other people. I did eventually get over her. I've had a couple great long-term relationships with people who also deserve to have albums recorded about them. There's a romanticism to wallowing in depression and love lost lament, but I don't recommend it. I recommend sobriety, and seeking a therapist, or the love of family and friends, or if it works for you, getting drunk and having a quick rebound and moving on, if that's possible. It's only love, after all, it's not worth your greater health being sacrificed through self-injurious behaviors. At the depths of any down, there is a re-emergence to be found. If you run across my songs at the bottom of your bottoming out, please use them to lift yourself up, to release yourself. Find your own means of creative release. Me sending her these songs was the worst thing I could have done if I wanted to "get her back." I realized that and so I wrote "It's Sleazy When You Know How" as an acknowledgement of how love songs can be emotionally manipulative and that's not an okay way to be. But being overly intoxicated and too self-conscious and self-loathing and sad sack to put it out there and be willing to let others love you is no way to live either. Being a decent person is hard.

Food For Thought Grinnell, Iowa

A former percussionist from Iowa moved to Chicago, bought a computer, a music software, cheap drum machine and MIDI controller and started living out his dream of being a bedroom recorder singer-songrapper. It got worse as he moved to Oakland and continued to do it. He is back in Iowa now and still can't help himself. The pull to make low-fi DIY tunes is strong in this one. ... more
