about

I have to admit that even as a young rap fan, the rap ballads on any album were always my favorite. As a music fan in general, I was always a sucker for the ballads on the albums. Tribe's "Bonita Applebaum," Erik B. and Rakim's "Teach The Children," Elvis Costello's "Allison," Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers To Cross," etc. I was dealing with break-up lament and single when I did these, but that's not the whole story. I was having fun playing around with how I'd translate my singing voice to the ballads I chose for this album. I had a lot of fun trying to sing the rapper Aceyalone's "Love and Hate" in an attempt at a Johnny Cash voice. I also around this time rapped Bob Dylan's entire 40+ minute "TIme Out Of Mind" album in less than 15 minutes, but it wasn't good enough to share, at least not yet. I had the idea to shoot on album cover that was me in bed under a comforter, with a microphone emerging from beneath the sheets that I held in my hand in a crooning pose. Thus, love "covers" would be a double entendre. I had a roommate shoot an attempt one day and I have the print but it's not worth sharing either. Maybe I'll get a photographically inclined friend to give it another try, once a major label hears these low-fi recorded gems and decides they need big budget backing. I hold my breath in wait.

A former percussionist from Iowa moved to Chicago, bought a computer, a music software, cheap drum machine and MIDI controller and started living out his dream of being a bedroom recorder singer-songrapper. It got worse as he moved to Oakland and continued to do it. He is back in Iowa now and still can't help himself. The pull to make low-fi DIY tunes is strong in this one. ... more
